17 escape death as trailers collide in Edo

No fewer than 17 persons on Sunday escaped death when a trailer load of cement with registration number Kogi JMU31XA crashed into another trailer after its brake failed along Asaba-Benin Expressway.

Eyewitness said the trailer veered off of its lane around the mechanic village along the expressway heading towards Benin and crashed into a trailer loaded with drinks.

It was gathered some persons, including members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers and commuters waiting for vehicles travelling to Benin/Lagos were among those that escaped.

A patron of the mechanic village and the Hausa community, Francis Brown, told our correspondent that from February to date the spot had recorded the death of 23 persons either due to head-on collision or brake failure.

While calling on the state government and authorities concerned to relocate the mechanic village to avoid further incident of ghastly

motor accident, Brown decried the incessant road accidents along the Asaba-Benin Expressway saying that most of the accidents were caused by brake failure.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, confirmed that no life was lost, saying the incident occurred about 7:30 am.
